Fulton County commissioners have approved a $900 million hospital campus in Union City to address the healthcare crisis left behind after Atlanta Medical Center South closed in 2022.

The closure turned South Fulton into a recognized healthcare desert, with residents facing longer travel times for emergency care and lower life expectancy than other parts of the county.

The new campus will include:
- 200-bed hospital
- Medical office building
- Specialty care
- Orthopedic services
- Pediatric care
- A freestanding ER

The full hospital is projected to open between 2030 and 2031, marking a major investment in long-overlooked infrastructure for the Southside Atlanta community.
