North Point Mall's Arena Plan Passed 4 to 3. The NHL Team Is Still a Separate Question.

North Point Mall has spent years as the property everyone in north Fulton keeps asking about. What happens to it next? There is an answer to part of that question: Alpharetta City Council approved the redevelopment plan by a vote of 4 to 3.

This is not a mall refresh. The proposal would turn the property into a large mixed-use entertainment district with housing, hotel space, restaurants, retail, entertainment and hockey facilities. The piece drawing the most attention is a proposed 20,000-seat hockey arena, which the developers hope could eventually help attract an NHL franchise.

Here is the distinction worth holding onto. Alpharetta approved a redevelopment. It did not receive a hockey team. Those are two separate decisions made by two separate sets of people, and only one of them has happened.

What the council vote does is clear a hurdle. The city has said this vision can move forward, and a 4 to 3 margin tells you how much conversation it took to get there. What the vote does not do is settle how large the district ultimately becomes, because that answer sits with whether professional hockey follows.

My take: I would rather see a plan aim high and pass narrowly than watch this property sit through another season of speculation, and the mixed-use program here stands on its own list of uses whether or not a franchise ever lands. But the arena is the loudest part of the pitch, and the part the city controls least. The honest way to read this approval is as permission to build, not as a promise of an NHL team. Everything after that depends on a decision made somewhere other than Alpharetta.
